For the first time, Battlegrounds is partnering with veteran teacher and gamer Timothy Winkler to provide a five day long morning camp playing Magic the Gathering. Campers can expect a fun week collecting, trading and competing in the world’s most popular TCG.
The camp aims to be between twelve to twenty campers who are rising six through ninth graders.
Campers start the week being presented with a starter deck made from the Magics Foundations Jumpstart release.
Additionally campers will receive a general starter kit of supplies to get them off started right to enjoy the game to its fullest such as sleeves a play mat.
As the week goes on, booster packs are given out (cost also included as part of the camp tuition) and a constructed tournament is run.
The week ends with a Friday draft tournament where players will receive 6 booster packs to forge a deck with their new found skills and play for prizes.
Day 1: Campers new to MtG will learn the basics of the game and build their first deck using the new Jumpstart format. Any campers with experience playing will help teach newer players to build a group that can have fun playing and exploring the game for the rest of the week.
Days 2-4: Campers will learn more about strategies for deck building and receive new packs of cards to open and trade. They will then compete in a multi-day constructed event against each other.
Day 5: Campers will learn strategies for drafting and participate in a tournament against each other.
Each day the camp will start from 9-1:00 P.M. the store opens to the public at noon.
Campers will leave being a full fledge Magic the Gathering player and ready to take the fun into the future.
All participants will need to fill out this google document to register.

Who are the hosts for the camp?
Hi, my name is Timothy Winkler. I have been a middle school science teacher since 2002 teaching in Prince Edward County, Chesterfield County and at St. Michael’s for the last ten years. I’ve been a nerd for tabletop gaming ever since the early 90s when I played Heroquest and Dungeons and Dragons for the first time. Over my two and a half decades in the classroom, I have incorporated gaming into my classes and successfully taught many students how to access and enjoy the ttg world.
There are a lot of great benefits to tabletop gaming for young people. Problem solving, social interaction and screen free entertainment are core principles to something like Magic the Gathering. It is my goal along with Battlegrounds to give even more young people a way to enter the hobby through this camp experience. If you have questions about the camp, please feel free to reach out to me directly through email at wink0083sites@gmail.com
George Rollins co-owner of Battlegrounds will be aiding Tim to make sure the experience has everything it needs to be a fantastic time for the kids. An expert in the gaming industry and passionate about the benefits gaming provides for both individuals and a community.
Is there an age limit for the class?
Rather than an age limit, we are limiting to rising 6th through 9th graders.
Is food provided?
No, but participants may bring snacks or purchase from the store’s snack section.
Is there a refund or cancellation policy?
Full refunds are eligible up to 30 days out from the event. Spots in the camp will be transferable but not refundable after this time. We expect this to be popular and fill up so please be mindful of taking up a slot if you are unsure if it can actually be attended. Entry covers the entire event there is no partial refund for missed days.
Is there a dress code?
No, but we request that no one wear clothes that contain offensive messaging. Battlegrounds is an inclusive space that is meant to be safe and comfortable for all types of people.
Is there a behavior code?
Yes, it is expected that all participants will be at the camp for the same reasons, to meet new people and dive into MtG as a gaming experience. We will not tolerate any camper who acts in a way that prevents others from being able to participate in that experience. Battlegrounds reserves the right to remove campers from our roster for behaving in any ways that negatively impact the experience we are offering.

The best FLGS I have ever been too. Awesome and friendly staff, great community based group of awesome gamers. Overall top notch!
This has been my primary shop for several years now. The staff are friendly in a “remembers what you tend to buy months later “ sort of way. They go out of their way to build a community. The team is knowledgeable like only a game fan can be, and makes recommendations based on their experience. They know their product lines, and it’s absolutely clear. They do their darnedest to have as much of a product line as possible, and frequently have stock other stores don’t.Not to be missed
Battlegrounds is one of the best local gaming stores I've ever had the pleasure of being able to frequent. The owners are great, the customer service is top notch, the stock is great, and there is a ton of gaming space for whatever games you may be into. If you are in the greater Richmond area, you'd be remiss to go anywhere but here for any of your gaming needs.
Awesome place!! Great people, big space, best game store I’ve ever been to.
